BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2021 – lessons for our journey to net zero

BP’s Statistical Review of World Energy 2021, presented and published last week by Spencer Dale, Group Chief Economist, revealed the dramatic impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on global energy markets, with both primary energy demand and carbon emissions falling at their fastest rates since the Second World War.

Whilst renewable energy continued to grow, with solar power recording its largest ever increase, Dr Edward Libbey of Grosvenor Clive & Stokes commented that this ‘year like no other’ provided a sobering insight into the scale of the challenges we face to consistently replicate these falls in order to meet our 2050 carbon emissions target.
